A Message to Parents
|Welcome to the world of Pern! Dragonriders of Pern is a writing club based
on a series of fantasy/science fiction novels written by author Anne
Our writing club operates by our members creating fictional characters who might live on Pern, they then write stories (usually two to three pages long) about that character and those with whom they interact and post them to our private mailing list.
Only current Dragonriders of Pern members are on this list and have access to the posts sent to it. Because we are well aware that many of our writers are minors, some under the age of 15, the club has strict rules about what kind of writing is acceptable to be posted to the list.
These rules can be seen in Section 2.2: Writing Style of our Club Rules.
Some issues of which we believe you should be aware, though, have to do with the cultural setting of Pern. These concerns deal with the mating flights of dragons.
If you have not read any of the Dragonriders of Pern books, the situation with dragonriders are that they are bonded with their mounts (dragons) through a telepathic and empathic link. They know and feel their dragons’ thoughts, feelings and – at times – appetites. When a dragon reaches physical maturity, particularly gold and green dragons (the females) they will mate and when dragons mate, so do their riders. It is the one time that the dragon’s desires overwhelm those of the rider, and the result can be riders of the same sex finding themselves in bed together.
If you have any concerns with the above we strongly suggest that you read any one of the books in the Dragonriders of Pern series. “Dragonflight” is recommended as a first time reader’s choice. If you still have concerns after that, please do not hesitant to contact council or your child’s mentor who will be happy to answer any of your questions.
Thank you for your time
