The DragonRiders Club website may include links to other Internet sites as a convenience to its users. The DragonRiders Club is not responsible for the content on those sites and does not necessarily endorse any such sites or the information, material, products or services contained on or accessible through the sites. Users following these external links visit those sites at their own risk.

1.4 Use at your own risk

The DragonRiders Club and website are provided "as is", and any use of posted material and information is at the user's own risk. The information provided by the DragonRiders Club may not be accurate, work for a particular situation, or be suitable or appropriate for certain uses. Joining of the DragonRiders Club is at the member's own risk. The DragonRiders Club makes no warranties and assumes no liability for any damages suffered by a member as a result of their DragonRiders Club membership.

1.5 Membership is a privilege, not a right

Membership in the DragonRiders Club is a privilege, not a right, and those privileges can be revoked at the Club administration's discretion if the member is found to be in violation with the rules and guidelines outlined herein. Failure to comply with the Terms of Membership can lead to consequences such as warnings, termination of membership, and temporary or permanent banning from the Club. The DragonRiders Club's failure to insist upon strict enforcement of any provision of this agreement shall not be construed as a waiver of any provision or right.

The Club is administered by a Council of elected members. Special Club positions and awards, such as premium or ranking personas, mentoring or other administrative positions, are privileges allocated based on availability and the applying member's experience and Pern knowledge as perceived by the allocating Council. The DragonRiders Club makes no guarantees that members will be able to gain these positions, and members do not have the right to insist on preferred treatment based on seniority, post count, holding ranking or administrative positions, or additional services to the Club.

1.6 Member information, privacy and security

Members must provide true personal information on the join form when joining the DragonRiders Club, including real name, age, and an accurate email address. Please refer to our Privacy Policy for details on the kind of information we collect and how we use it.

Submission of personal information for inclusion in the Members List in the Members Only section of the DragonRiders Club website is not required for membership. The DragonRiders Club cannot guarantee complete security, but reasonable steps are taken in an effort to maintain security of member information and prevent harvesting of members' email addresses by 'spam-bots'. Members agree to keep the Members Only password confidential, but acknowledge that password protection does not protect the member information in the Members Only section from unauthorized use of the password. Members are expected to respect other members' privacy and not to share another member's personal information, such as name and email address, with non-members without the member's express permission.

Members are expected to safeguard the email account they are using for DragonRiders mailing list subscriptions and take all necessary precautions to prevent unauthorized access to mailing lists, subscription options, and list archives. In the case of a prankster using your email account to send inappropriate messages, we have no other choice but to unsubscribe your email address and investigate your identity if you wish to remain a member.

1.7 Investigation and disclosure of member information

The DragonRiders Club administration reserves the right to investigate cases of suspected fraud, identity deception and multiple membership identities, and to deny or terminate memberships upon the discovery or strong suspicion that the information provided by a member is willfully deceiving or that a member is privately plotting to cause problems. In such a case, we have no other choice but to assume insincere motives for joining the Club and the intent to interfere with Club operation by causing trouble. To protect the Club and its members from harm, Council may take a "better safe than sorry" approach to these cases and take action on the basis of such suspicions even in the lack of hard evidence.

Notwithstanding the promises made in our Privacy Policy, the DragonRiders Club administration reserves the right to disclose current or past member information in the event of any parental complaint or legal action arising from a member's Club membership in the good faith believe that such disclosure is necessary to comply with applicable laws and regulations, to protect or defend proprietary or other rights, or to protect the personal safety of other DragonRiders members, particularly our underage members.

1.8 Compliance with Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA)

Because we need to collect personal information (such as email addresses) for administrative purposes, membership is not available to children under the age of 13. This restriction is clearly marked on the DragonRiders Club join form and Privacy Policy. The DragonRiders Club will not knowingly solicit nor accept identifiable information from children known to be under the age of 13. Please understand that this age limit is not meant to discriminate against younger children's writing abilities, but is imposed on us by the U.S. Children Online Privacy Protection Act and the occasional PG-13 rated post on our mailing list.

Beyond this restriction, the DragonRiders Club is open to members of all ages. Members are expected to keep this in mind when interacting with other members and to follow traditionally accepted rules governing the contact between adults and minors. In particular, members are expected not to engage in any activity considered harmful to minors. All material posted to the DragonRiders Club mailing lists is to be kept within the guidelines of U.S. PG-13 rating standards.

1.9 Ownership of member contributions

The DragonRiders Club acknowledges that members own the persona descriptions, pictures, and posts they create for the Club. However, member submissions of text or graphics for our web pages are by the nature of their submission accompanied by permission to be modified and displayed by the DragonRiders Club on DragonRiders Club web pages. By submitting such text or graphics, the member agrees that (except for PC/ONPC persona sheets or gallery art) permission is for the document to be displayed for the life of the Club, although Council retains the right to remove the contribution at its discretion. PC/ONPC persona sheets and gallery art will be removed from the DragonRiders web pages at the member's request or upon termination of membership. Posts to the mailing lists will remain available through our private archives.

Members submitting material for the website or posting material to the Club's mailing lists represent that such material is owned by the member or used with permission of the copyright holder(s). The DragonRiders Club respects the intellectual properties of others and expects its members to do the same. If you believe your persona description or other material has been copied and is available on the DragonRiders website in a way that constitutes copyright infringement, please contact the DragonRiders Council and/or Webbies.

1.10 Member conduct and expectations

In a perfect community, everybody behaves in a reasonable, courteous, and respectful way towards others. Sadly, the real world is not perfect, and online communities may suffer damage from disruptive behavior encouraged by the anonymity and facelessness of online communications.

These rules and guidelines are here to protect you (and others) and to ensure that the DragonRiders Club is a safe and fun writing community for all its members. Becoming a member of this community, you are taking responsibility for your own actions and acknowledge that the DragonRiders Club administration may intervene with certain types of behavior to protect the integrity of the Club as well as the interests of other Club members, their personas and stories.

1.11 Rules and regulations

The DragonRiders Club provides the opportunity to engage in interactive writing in the form of PBeM (play by e-mail) and compete with other members for awards such as premium and ranking positions. As in any game or competitive environment, there must be a few rules for the players to assure fair play and prevent conflicts. Our persona and posting rules are aimed at keeping things "in canon" for our chosen playground of non-AIVAS, 9th Pass Pern, preventing abuse of other people's ideas and personas, and providing the best approximation of a fair distribution of the awards and perks offered by the Club (e.g. ranking positions). The DragonRiders Council may add, change, or remove rules at any time as perceived necessary for smooth operation of the Club.

While members are welcome to criticize the Rules and Regulations of the Club and make suggestions for improvements, members acknowledge that such Rules and Regulations are needed to govern the interaction between members and agree to abide by them. In particular, members agree not to wilfully break the rules or maliciously seek to exploit loopholes, or to constantly or massively undermine or publicly attack Council's work.

1.12 Legal and ethical responsibility

Members are legally and ethically responsible for their actions and submissions to the DragonRiders Club mailing lists and any consequences they might carry. In particular, members are responsible for honoring the rights of others, including intellectual property rights, the right to privacy, and the right not to be libeled or slandered. Members agree not to plagiarize (take credit for) material created by someone else for use in the DragonRiders Club.

Member emails posted to the DragonRiders Club mailing lists express only the views of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the views of the majority of the Club or the Club administration. Although the DragonRiders Council may monitor posts for appropriateness and compliance with the Club rules, we cannot pre-screen all post material. Therefore, members agree not to hold any person or entity other than the member who posted the material responsible for the content of such postings.

1.13 Computer viruses, loss of data

Members agree to take all necessary precautions not to submit any files that contain viruses, 'Trojans', or any other malicious code that may damage the mailing list server or someone else's computer. It is the member's responsibility to obtain security patches, anti-virus software and the appropriate updates to protect the member's computer from harm. The DragonRiders Club disclaims all responsibility or liability for any damages caused by viruses or other malicious code submitted through the DragonRiders Club mailing lists or its members. The DragonRiders Club is not responsible for any loss of data resulting from such submissions, or from server or network outages, file corruption, or any other reason. We urge you to keep backup copies of material you submit in the event of a mailing list service interruption or loss of your submission in transit.

1.14 Inactive memberships

As an interactive writing community, the DragonRiders Club depends on participation. Therefore, we require posting from all our members and do not allow people to sign up as lurkers. The DragonRiders Council reserves the right to terminate memberships if the member has been inactive (non-posting, no response to Mentor/Council emails) for more than one month without notifying Council of a prolonged Leave of Absence.

1.15 Changes to this agreement

The DragonRiders Club may modify this agreement at any time via unanimous Council vote. Notification of any such modifications will be distributed to Club members via email on the Club's main mailing list, and modifications shall become effective immediately upon posting of the modified agreement.
